My best suggestion is that for less than 1/4 what you paid for that you could get a 1 or 2gb MP3 player that will hold around 2-400 songs and it will select random just fine, with a list that large i doubt they can succesfully randomize. Besides, will you ever listen to 1600+ songs in a row?

I think a simple enough solution to the triggering would be to make it self-triggerable. That way the subject could choose when they were in a safe situation for this experiance and then wait for their partner to "make a move".
