mp3 altering software

could anyone give me a link to a program for altering mp3s? i don't know anything about it, so the simpler the better. i'm trying to make a shorter version of the freeze test file. i had one, but somehow it's changed and now never actually reaches the end. thanks

http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/ - Wavepad. Free. I used it, pretty simple and does all I needed.

There is a lot of others shareware editors, you can find it using a saerch engine for 'mp3 editor'.

If you're running Windows, then there should be a program called "Sound Recorder."

I have XP, and its located in Start Menu>Program Files>Accessories>Entertainment

It works for me, but you need to have the file in *.WAV format for it to work (I use MusicMatch to convert).

Yeah man, I'd really recommend soundforge. It's what I use and it's got a pretty basic structure but it can be used for many different things. If not that, then give a program called Cakewalk 9 a shot. This program's more of a sequencer, used for creatuing music and such, but it's also got heaps of sound-altering features, although I think you may have to pay for it. I dunno, check it out.

When you use MusicMatch, how much more space does the resulting .wav file use than the pre-existing .mp3 file?

It depends on the sample rate. But for reference, a CD-DA audio rate is 150kB/sec. Or about 9MB/minute

Thanks, n00b. That's a big difference. Rather like the difference between .jpeg and .tiff. The latter format is better, but for many purposes the .jpeg is serviceable--with much less space used.
