devonimp, you were pretty close.
A binaural file is one that is separated into two tracks (stereo), with one containing a 'beat' and the other containing another 'beat.' When each of these tracks go into their respective ears, they are supposed to combine inside the brain and match up to form a pulse that is supposed to resonate and influence brainwave patterns into a particular state, i.e. hypnosis, sleep, etc.
I'm not entirely sure if it works or not, but it's an idea that people have claimed works like little else would, for them. I didn't see much of a difference when i tried it.
