I'll admit to only trying once or twice (without success) but I can safely say for worse - think about it; when you're hypnotised you focus all your attention on one thing, the hypnotist's voice. When you're asleep, your attention is all over the place - hence dreams.

If someone starts off with the old "Oh, well try it, you never know" - give me some proof first.

It's more limiting than hypnosis in certain ways.

When your sleeping your mind can only understand present tense and past tense. Any suggestions worded in future tense will be ignored for the most part. When your asleep your mind is likely to favor short, simple, and positive suggestions instead of complex, long, or negative statements.

You can learn in your sleep, but it's not as effective as a true hypnotic trance. It's more likely that listening to files while you sleep can only reinforce suggestions, from files you listened to during the day.

You can't use sleep learning as a substitute for true hypnosis though.
