I have uploaded a story that is far above 1000 words and waited a few days and have not gotten the free premium. Am i doing something wrong or is it bugged?

That offer is not longer offered. We discontinued it due to repeated abuse in both file uploads and stories.

I also ran into this, since the website still offers it when looking into premium. Guess I’ll take my story down.

you might want to make a post about this somewhere EMG. the free premium for folks who make files was a defining element of the site for over a decade and this forum is the only place where i saw you mention making a change. perhaps putting something in the premium information section about "because of abuse we no longer offer premium membership for file creation" would make this information easier to find.
