Trance occurs all the time naturally.
Watching TV or a Movie. Reading.
Playing darts.
Anytime someone focuses so deeply on something that the rest of the world just disapears... you have trance.
Of course, most people don't understand or recognize this when it occurs in order to take advantage of the situation...
Example:
I'm playing chess late last night in a Hotel.
Now chess is an interesting game...
Because unless your playing with a clock it's tends to trance for trance.
A person sits there for minutes deeply focused and halucinating moves and possibilities. Nearby conversations and events can be oblivious to a focused chess player.
At some point I find myself in a sticky situation.
I'm about to be pinned and lose my queen if this guy brings his rook down.
On the otherhand if he moves his knight... I'm saved.
As he focuses intently I turn to the guy waiting next to play.
"You know its funny... about now, usually I'd be out dancing. At NIGHT I like to MOVE. Speaking of MOVE, last NIGHT, John and I went to a NITEclub called MOVE. It was a GREAT IDEA, and we figured we'd JUST DO IT."
Now the guy I'm talking to is looking at me weird because he knows I don't go dancing, he has no clue who the hell John is, and the conversation is a little off...
"Who's John?"
John was staying in room 23 but the other NIGHT he had to MOVE to 26.
The player starts to put his hand on his KNIGHT.
Now there's no reason for him to move his Knight since it's the only move that will save me... but he starts to pick it up anyways.
Then the guy who's observing and I'm talking to sucks in his breath unconsciouly, seeing the mistake the player is about to make.
THe player catches the observers warning.... and hesitates.
He spends a few moments contemplating when the observer says "You know I see a lot of good options there for you"
Immediately after that the player brings down the rook and pins my queen.
But he goes on for like 5 minutes about how what he really wanted to do is sacrifice the knight for some crazy plan he thought would work...
I just glowered at the observer for screwing up my Jedi Mind Tricks.
(actually it's my own fault for not suggesting that he just shut up and watch)
But here's the question?
Have any of you tried to take advantage of natural trance states in others?
How did it turn out? What did you/they do?
