Will being hypnotissed make you more suggestible in general?

Postby johnstro12 » December 6th, 2019, 8:52 am

Hey guys,

Im wondering wether being regularly hypnotised will make you more suggestable in general, more sensitve to being influenced without your desire to etc and in a way.. weaken your will?

IVe been noticing for me being hypnotised is kinda like allowing words to lock my attention and ''having their way with it'' taking it in directions they want. Moving it

ive been noticing im getting really sensitive to marketing pages - where they do all these over the top word patterns and so called ''covert influencing'' those things are starting to do what they intend to do - i read it and i notice its taking effect even though i know theyre doing it i just stop reading.

i hear normal sentences in suggestion form being spoken and i feel like its a hypnotic command

And how im less will-full, in the sense that my attention allows itself to be more easily pulled by everything because that seems to be what im conditioning in

i remember i used to think direct hynosis tapes were ridiculous i would sit there listening and the guy would - you are xyx and your are noticing abcd and all i could think was - whatever gave you that idea

ive become alot more suggestable

Has aybody experienced something simmilar?
Toughts, experiences?

How do you prevent this?

Im thinking maybe grounding more, doing mindfullness
practicing things that focus your attention training your attention where it is.

im just thinking out loud, lets talk!

Hi, johnstro12. Welcome to the WMM site.
Now and then, I poke my hypnotist head into the forums, just to check the zeitgeist. That's what led me to your unanswered question.

I'm the type of guy that likes scientifically-supported data. I hope you are too. If so, maybe you'll understand what I mean when I say: Correlation is not causation.

Your experience with hypnosis positions you to legitimately theorize about a shift in suggestibility. I'm unable to point you toward any study that authoritatively denies/supports that thesis. But I can point you toward a significant anecdotal example that agrees with your theory:

The documentary Holy Hell describes the Buddahfield (cult). The leader would charge members $50 for a weekly group hypnosis session referred to as "cleansing". Eventually, some members were convinced that they were experiencing the presence of deity - and that's a tough bulls-eye for a hypnotist to hit, isn't it?

johnstro12, as much as I'd enjoy designing a scientifically valid method for testing/proving your theory, I'm contented to let this one go. Even though I cannot prove it, I believe you're becoming more suggestible.

And there are hundreds of WMM members who wish they were you.
The chains of habit are too light to be felt until they’re too heavy to be broken.

Hi, John!

I'm with Mr. Friendly in cautioning against confusing correlation and causation. And I don't think hypnosis itself will cause you to be more susceptible to suggestion in general; however, your willing attitude towards, and experience with, hypnosis may let you more easily slide into state when you subconsciously notice hypnotic patterns in everyday life.

As for resistance, it is often said that "all hypnosis is self hypnosis", and you can't be hypnotized "against your will", but you can be hypnotized "without your knowledge". While the absolute truth of these statements is open to debate, you have already taken the first step in consciously recognizing these patterns and their effects on you. From here, what you need to do is develop a sort of "backstop", or "firewall", such that you teach yourself NOT to be hypnotized without an positive statement of intent, then force yourself out of state when you detect an induction pattern. This is the same sort of firewall that some hypnotists implant in their subjects to block other hypnotists from "stealing" them, (or even more maliciously, from "healing" them...).
