While this post is, in part, an answer to a post elsewhere, I thought that one methond that I use to help remove excess thoughts during hypnosis deserved a thread of its own as it would seem to be a often asked question from the newer members here.

First I would like to say that I in no way have a corner on the market of clearing my thoughts, but I do have a method that works not only for me but also others that I have taught to use it.

Before I get into the method that I use, I think that it would be in order to give you readers a little bit of background information on myself.

While I have been into hypnosis "per se" for only about a year or so, I am a Wiccan, and have been doing trance work for about 15 years or so and have found some good methods for trancing that usually work quite well for me most of the time. The reason that trance work is so vital to Wicca is that when you are working any kind of ritual, it is very important that you have a very clear picture in your mind of what you want to accomplish in this particular ritual. If you don't have this clear picture in your mind, your ritual can, and often does, go awry.

Enough of the background information, now on to the mthod that I use to clear my mind of thought.

While the induction is running, I listen to what is being said, but at the same time I am letting any thoughts that does not have to do with the subject at hand go with each breath that I exhale. With each breath going out, I let one thought go that does not have to do with the thought at hand. I continue this process untill my mind is as blank as it needs to be for the task at hand.

While this may seem like a complicated process, in practice I find it to be quite simple. I do want to say that it will likely take you some amount of time before you get proficient with this type of approach to clearing your mind.
