If I was to record my own voice or a computer generated voice saying a phrase, would that work just as well?

Possibly yes, possibly no. It depends on how you view it internally to make it work. Some people will listen to a recording they made themselves or one they themselves made a computer generate for them, and will interpret it as no different from saying it themselves. Other people, like yourself perhaps, will just accept that it's different from them saying it and accept the trigger without hesitation.

you can copy the trigger phrase from the original file and create a new mp3 from it. this works fine for me.
