This message will serve to reveal my ignorance when it comes to computers & specifically java. Nonetheless, here is my question(s):
Have the WMM gurus considered using another type of "java" that lets regular folk (as opposed to the IT enlightened) enter WMM chat ?
Has anyone successfully entered the WMM Chat area? When I attempt to do so, I get the following message: This chat client doesn't work properly with Microsoft(tm) Java. You need to be runnning with Sun Java, if you do not have it you can get the Runtime only from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
However, when I select the platform to download from - that's a whole other problem - since in my world "java" is coffee. It tells me I need a JDK something or other. I have no clue about JDK.
What am I doing wrong ??

Linking to a direct download for java no longer works, so you need to know this much about it: There are 2 bits of java. You need a JRE to use java programs, and a JDK to write them.
Try the link: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/
The one you want on that page is "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2" at present ... the version number changes occasionally, but the one you need is always clearly labelled "JRE".

The java chat crashed Opera when I tried it, but from what I saw... it seemed to have an ircish look to it.
Is the java chat just an irc client? And if so, what's the irc server used and can any client connect to it?

Yes. Its irc.hypnonet.net and the channel was #warpmymind last time I checked.

java.sun.com is geared more towards developers. For users
java.com is easier.

Hypnonet is no longer, as the owner wasn't able to handle the server costs associated with that name.
For those using an IRC client, the new server can be found here: 65.6.176.82, port 6667. The channel's still #warpmymind.
