This site is a real oasis for a wide variety of people. I know of two concert pianists here who play Chopin and Bach at virtually the professional level. We have among others Netherlanders, Icelanders, Danes, and Germans who write better English than many of the Americans. The Australians are no slouches, either. The state school system there must be doing a creditable job; it turns out people who can think and write...and are able to express a coherent opinion. I know of at least one who is in a very good university and doing well, and I'm sure there are many others.
And what do we Americans do? We argue about "singing" groups whose names anybody other than pre-pubescent middle schoolers should be ashamed to know.
Fortunately, things aren't as bleak as they seem. We have some board-certified hypnotists in our midst who try to maintain a reasonable dialogue on a subject with which they have more than a passing familiarity. That is the main purpose of this site, after all. These professionals often have a rough go of it, and I give them credit for their tenacity and dedication.
What troubles me greatly is the lack of concern...even the lack of awareness...that this site is the private property of someone who donates hours of his time and expertise to foster knowledge of hypnosis--and what happens? Guests complain that he doesn't give away free files fast enough, and they take up time and space discussing who are the worst pop groups on the airwaves.
We went through a phase recently in which one of our number, exercising a minute amount of authority, warned various registered users/posters that they were off-topic. That particular arbiter of the germane need have no fear here. This thread meets the criteria admirably: it's idle and it's chatter. Read on: it's like two old maids talking over the back fence.
The back fence would work admirably, since the two are neighbors. They ride the same bus to school. One hopes that it's a city bus, so at least they have to pay fare when they board. I have a suspicion that it's a school bus, and they view free transportation--like free hypnosis files--as an entitlement for which they don't even have to say thanks.
This site is a haven for all sorts of people--God bless us all. Straights, lesbians, gays, cross-dressers, transgendered M2F and F2M; people with every conceivable fetish, from feet to rhinestone collars. People who have known long illnesses, people who face the future with courage, young people who know the preciousness of life as they take medication to preserve it. That's what makes the site tick. All sorts of people, from all sorts of backgrounds, with their own interests and a willingness to share their impressions and their experience. I came here in mid-April, and the tolerance was alive and well and flourishing.
We are all of us guests in someone else's house. He has welcomed us all...a motley assortment about whom even Noah might have had second thoughts. :) It is all the more distressing, therefore, when one sees in print the disparaging remarks made by the immature and ungrateful against those who already bear their share of the world's weight.
Why here? Why now? Why ever?
Surely our public schools, that teach students without tuition or fees, can do better than that.
