Mixing files

Postby theskank » December 4th, 2007, 11:38 pm

I have trouble with getting into trance. Blinks induction works really well. Is it possible to say cut out the awakening in Blinks induction and cut out the induction in the file I want to use? Is this a bad idea? Is it rude? I'm new, and sorry if I am asking silly questions. I tried looking, but couldn't find the answers.

It is fairly easy to edit files with audacity (free program--- just google it). It is never rude to edit files for your own personal use; it is often necessary to edit them if there is something objectionable or unnecessary in the file. I've cut files short, removed noises, changed the EQ, even changed the pitch and speed occasionally.

Although I am not sure why you would want to cut out Blink's awakening as it is a permissive awakener -- you will only wake up if you desire to wake up and at least a minute has passed --- the latter of which is impossible if you are using a playlist.

Several items come up here. I'll run through the ones I noticed.

Technical possibility: Sure. No problem. The file was recorded using Audacity, and though I try very hard to get 'em in one take, I almost never do. That recording was spliced together and can be cut apart the same way. There are plenty of others (like axl233) who're editing all the files they take from here. There's ample information on how to use the software already in the archives here, if you need a primer.

Legality: No problem, conditionally. I doubt anybody's going to make much of an issue of intellectual property law here unless you're doing some pretty serious piracy, but here's an FYI. As long as you're editing the file for yourself, you can do whatever you want with it. The point at which the law kicks in is "publication" of the altered file, which can mean the moment a second person hears it. If you want to re-mix the file and give or sell it to other people, you need to get permission from the copyright holder (which, here, is probably going to be the file creator). Intellectual property laws are complex within a single country, and once you start crossing national borders, as we routinely do, it's hash. First, follow your conscience, and second, if your conscience is unavailable, hung-over, or busily watching Internet porn, then consult a competent attorney in your jurisdiction (which I am not).

In passing I'll mention that people who steal from hypnotists are subject to long bouts of searing, debilitating, horrific, psychogenic pain that is intractable to treatment and usually centered in the genitals. Imagine the sound of wet canvas ripping while it's on fire.

End-product desirability: I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of people already doing what you're suggesting. Try it and see if it works for you. That's really the only way to know. You might try what axl233 suggests just because it's easier.

Politesse: (My answer here is colored by my preferences.) It's always good to ask. You've asked. If you have edits that you'd like to make to a file, I'd suggest sending a note to the file's author before, to be polite (we all like fan mail), and after, to say how it worked out ('cause no matter how good we are, there is always more we can learn). If you can explain what changes you're making to the file and why you're making 'em, that's exactly the kind of feedback that most of the hypnotists here want.

Good luck with your hypnotic endeavors. Let me know if there's any way I can help.

I have altered several files and posted the altered ones on the site. I just make sure to get permission from the original file author first. (I have yet to have anyone say no)
