For me I only use trigger based ones, and generally they don't make me "dumber" I'm still completely capable of talking about literature and art, but I get really ditzy and forgetful, I have trouble opening doors and forget my keys and nearly walk into traffic

Simple solution, ask under trance. But you should always ask. (And yes I know that isn't a 100% foolproof method but its something)
