Video codecs?

I'm excited by the new video feature! Especially since the file series that I've recently begun uploading was originally intended to be paired with some simple video images.

But... now I'm left wondering what to encode them in. H.264 produces these lovely, tiny files (relatively speaking)... but if I understood what I've read about the patent situation correctly, would require paying substantial royalties per file because video is only available to "Premium" accounts and hence is not "free to end users."

I'll probably wind up using Theora just to be sure. But does this site have any official recommendations/guidelines?
