Depends what you call totally brainwashed... it is possible to be controlled very deeply, but total personality/ memory blanking is another thing altogether.
I have experienced some pretty intense stuff myself and from my experiences I have developed theories that I have every reason to be sure of. I believe that brainwashing is simply a hijacking of the normal lifelong learning process that we all experience. The subconscious mind gradually absorbs feelings from things that happen in day-to-day life and in return it supplies the outline, so to speak, of thoughts which is filled in by the conscious mind with whatever is happening at the time. In this way, the accumulation of experiences and feelings gradually forms the bulk of a person's identity and sense of normality. Brainwashing is the force-feeding of the subconscious mind with powerful ideas which alters the shape of a person's thoughts in a relatively short period of time. Of course I could be wrong, but if I'm not then certainly we are all conditioned, but being brainwashed IS a different thing.

no squealing... remember that it's all in your head"
