Is selling combinations of free files legal?

Postby iked » September 21st, 2017, 7:27 pm

Just asking - is conglomerating a multitude of free files into a 'sea of voices' file that is then sold legit? Just noticed as I picked up davinit's Redacted 101, and I recognize some of the files that are in the background - free files, at that, and while I can't be 100% sure, some sound pretty damn close to some paid files that are out there as well. Is this legit? I can understand releasing these conglomerations as free files with references to those inside, but otherwise this seems like a dishonest cash grab - at least if they're not stating what files they're using to make the combo. Thoughts?

I was not aware this was happening and will talk to the author in question.

There is no specific prohibition to such things but if you're selling a file that's built out of other people's contents I would expect you to recognize the contributions of the authors in question.
No matter where you go, there you are.

You need permission from the creator to do that.
You can do that with my files if you want, so long as I am credited.

My opinion is very similar to JackStock's, always ask the author before using their work. I am usually happy to contribute.

Thank you for mentioning this iked.

If they were using part of my stuff and posting it for free, all I would want would be credit.

If they are using what I made available for free to create something they are charging money for, and doing that without my consent think that is a problem. Of course if they were doing that with my material and I was aware of it, there is an easy fix. I obtain a copy of their pay content and make it available for free to anyone who wants it and dare them to challenge me.
