LEARN HOW TO SPELL

I can't tell you how many times I have encountered words that
were spelled incorrectly on these forums.

A simple little file - required listening before being permitted to
post on any forum - would raise the credibility of most posts.

How about it, a file that requires people to "Learn How to Spell"?

Hypnosis won't teach you to spell correctly. Could make them use spell check, but incorrect words may be used.

I have Grammar Nazi tendencies, so this appeals to me. However, even if you use a spellchecker, you still need to proofread your posts. Spellcheck will not flag a word as being the wrong word. If you're talking about the globe and you mistakenly type glove, well ... glove is a correctly spelled word but it's the wrong word. That's why you still must proofread your posts.

Why don't you write a script and post it?

Exactly. A compulsion to use the spell checker and also proofread your post using the preview button before submitting it would work. However, we currently have no way to make any corrections -- edit the post -- after it is posted. After it's posted and unable to be edited is when all the errors you missed become crystal clear. Even with all the precautions book publishers take, they still miss some typographical errors. It's inevitable. I bought and read one book recently that had two glaring errors in one paragraph. Those were the only two typos in the book, so I'm guessing that was where somebody got tired and took a break.

Of course, all this assumes that everybody listens to the file. Not everybody loved their English classes in school.

This would not work in the Success Stories Forum's Dumbing Down thread. There, the people using the file series take pride in not fixing their errors. More errors are better; the errors -- and the lack of desire to correct them -- shows how well the file is working. (You can usually tell if someone is faking; the language gets simpler as the errors accumulate.)

certainly a desire to be clear and understood by everyone is a good approach. Also, proofreading is more effective when it is done by reading the text backwards.

There are files that people are interested in, and there are ones that people are most certainly not interested in.
The internet is not the kind of place where you will find people that spell correctly. In a book, it can be infuriating if there are too many spelling errors. On the internet, I really don't care, as long as they can get the point across
